On Wednesday, the remains of an OFW who died in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia was finally home in the Philippines.
The 41-year-old OFW named Veronica Christy Benarao who died on March 3 because of cardiac arrest was already brought to her hometown in General Santos City.
According to Benarao’s family, the OFW was rushed to the hospital on February 24 after she passed out while in the house of her employer. It was then discovered that she had high blood pressure. And because of the cardiac arrest, she suffered from internal hemorrhage and was proclaimed brain dead until she finally died.
With the recent news involving mysterious deaths of OFWs, her family seeks that she undergoes autopsy to determine the real cause of her death and make sure that there was no foul play.
On the other hand, the Committee on Labor and Employment in the City Council would like to held Benarao’s agency to be responsible for her death after discovering that her work contract had already expired last December and she should have gone home by that time. But since there was no replacement for her, her employer decided to extend her work with them.

Meanwhile, the Advocates and Keepers Organization of OFWs claimed that Benarao has an existing ailment even before she left the Philippines to work abroad. Thus, she should not be allowed to leave the country.
The Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA) had pledged to support Benarao’s family by giving scholarship grants to her 4 children and a monetary livelihood assistance worth P15,000.
