A 79-year-old employer of an Indonesian domestic helper had been arrested by Hong Kong police. She is now facing charges of common assault and criminal intimidation.
In a report made by Sing Tao Daily, the old women surnamed Pang who lives in Wong Tai Sin District in Hong Kong had been arrested after a video posted on Facebook had gone viral where she was seen scolding and threatening to kill her helper.
In the video, Pang was repeatedly smacking the helper on her face and across her mouth while the helper was uttering, “Oh God, I’m being smacked. I don’t accept the way she’s speaking towards me.”
On the other hand, the employer was saying, “You’re so evil, what are you saying about me? Speak! Speak my language. What are you saying? Use Chinese.” While saying these, she was also poking the face of the poor helper with her finger.
Pang was arrested but had been released later on after posing a bail but was required to go back to the police by next week.
The 35-year-old helper whose identity was not revealed had been hired by Pang in her apartment in Grand View Garden in Wong Tai Sin last year. With Pang is her son who lives in the main land and goes home to visit her only once a week.
The said video made people enraged as it became widespread on the internet. Many among the netizens had urged the helper to call the police and report the incident. They claimed it was too much for her to bear as she had been maltreated and abused, to the extent of threatening to kill her.
At one point, the said incident had also raised concerns about the mandatory live-in rule that requires helpers to live with their helpers. However, Hong Kong’s High Court dismissed arguments from rights activists who claimed that the requirement only led to vulnerability of domestic helpers to abuse and maltreatment.
The court further emphasized that it did not violate any of the human fundamental rights. It added that if domestic helpers cannot stand the live-in rule, they have the choice to either quit their jobs and not to consider going to Hong Kong anymore.
Meanwhile, a representative from HELP, an NGO (non-government organization) that provides assistance to domestic helpers in Hong Kong said, “This, again, shines a spotlight on the live in rule which, makes domestic workers vulnerable, not only to physical abuse but to malicious allegations of criminal offence. If the domestic workeron the video was resting outside the home of the employer, the likelihood of such an incident occurring would have been reduced.”
Furthermore, in its statement to Coconuts HK, the NGO expressed disappointment as there is often lack of interest among the police to pursue abuse cases especially when the victims are domestic helpers.
Worse, domestic helpers are pressured after filing cases against their employers which forced them to just withdraw their complaints.
As such, in the case of the helper of Pang, if only there isn’t any video recorded to attest to how rudely she was being treated, the police might have not believe her statement and have not arrested Pang in the first place.
The video served as an evidence showing how the employer assaulted her.
