The death of an OFW in Hong Kong remains a mystery.
Elma Balatero, a 43-year-old OFW who was working as a domestic helper was found lying unconsciously beside a bucket and her cleaning gear at the parking lot of WoChe Estate at 7:49 in the morning. Based on reports, she collapsed while cleaning the car of her employer in Shatin.
Police claimed that paramedics came and rushed her to the hospital but sadly, she was proclaimed dead upon arrival at the hospital.
Contrary to previous reports where her death had been doubted and was linked to being overworked and not being fed properly by employer, Balatero’s friend attested that she was treated very well by her kind employers whom she served for several years. The friend even posted her opinion to refute false accusations that had circulated on social media.
“She is not overworked. Her employers were very kind to her”
As a matter of fact, Balatero’s employer shouldered the OFW’s eldest son’s travel expenses to Hong Kong. ATN Officer Hermogenes Cayabyab Jr. confirmed his arrival to arrange the repatriation of his mother.
ATN who is arranging the repatriation of Balatero is working closely with the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA) who is preparing for her funeral and the family’s benefits.
Balatero is a mother to two sons aged 22 and 21, respectively.
The OFW hailed from Tagbilaran, Bohol City and died on January 20, 2018.
