Manuel Remolacio, an engineer in Saudi Arabia, was shocked after discovering multiple withdrawals in his bank account.
He discovered continuous withdrawal of P475 in his BDO savings account which was fulfilled in an online shopping website. A total of P14,000 was withdrawn from his account.
“Dun kongaponakitanameronnangano… meronnang transactions saLazada. NagtakangapoakokasihindikonamanalamyungLazada,” says Remolacio.
He also admitted that he received an email asking for the details of his BDO account. He thought that it was from the bank.
“Panongapo naming malalamannaisang Phishing yun email. Na angsinasabi dun ay napakagandapo. Dapatanoyan, i-update moyung account mokasi that is another security measure,” Remolacio added.
Remolacio already seek the help from BDO but he is still worried about the status of his account.
“Hindi kami makatulog, Syempre nag-aalala kami bakabukaswalanayunglaman ng savings namin. Mahirappo,” he says.
BDO previously released a statement regarding these fraudulent transactions:
“BDO Unibank, the country’s largest bank, has committed to refund all clients whose accounts have been compromised by unauthorized transactions – after investigations prove that these are indeed fraudulent transactions.”
According to the Banko Central ng Pilipinas (BSP), they are implementing certain requirements for Philippine banks like having a hotline for OFWs, and prompt answer to follow-up investigations after 7 days.
However, depositors also need to understand that banks also need some time to conduct thorough investigation regarding their concerns.
If the victims are not contented with the results of the investigation, they can seek help at BSP.
“Angmgaibanamanparangino-authorize nilayungkamag-anakniladito. So they tell us naakoyungnabiktimaperoitoyungkapatidkonanjan. So kung may additional information, pwede din namanyun,” says Pia Roman Tayag from BSP.
For victims of fraudulent transactions, they can call the BSP hotline at (02)708-7087 or they can send an email to [email protected].
Though the priority of BSP is to refund the money of the victims, they cannot guarantee that all complaints will be resolved.
BSP is already communicating with the banks to fix the complaints regarding their system.
