“I don’t want to quarrel with Kuwait” – Says President Duterte Over The Deployment Ban of OFWs To Kuwait

“I don’t want to quarrel with Kuwait” – that is the firm statement of President Rodrigo Duterte following the implementation of deployment ban of Overseas Filipino Workers to Kuwait.

The decision was made because of the growing number of Filipino women who kill themselves after suffering abuses from their employers.

Furthermore, President Duterte advised his officials to conduct serious talks to Kuwait government upon the unacceptable abuses received by Filipina domestic helpers.

“I do not want a quarrel with Kuwait. I respect their leaders but they have to do something about this because many Filipinas will commit suicide,” says President Duterte in his speech during the launching of OFW bank.

“We have lost about four Filipino women in the last few months. It’s always in Kuwait,”Duterte added. “My advice is, we talk to them, state the truth and just tell them that it’s not acceptable anymore. Either we impose a total ban or we can have this corrected.”

There are about 250,000 Filipinos who works in Gulf countries and there is a growing number of abuses inflicted by their foreign employers. Despite that, OFWs still chose to work in Arab countries because of the higher salaries offered to them.

In fact, the remittances sent by OFWs greatly helped uplift the economy of the Philippines.
